Blow for Liverpool as Leon Goretzka joins Bayern Munich

Liverpool were rumoured to be leading the race for Goretzka at one point, but Schalke's domestic rivals Bayern have persuaded the midfielder - officially a free agent from July - to choose the Allianz Arena over Anfield.

Schalke have reiterated that they are still hopeful of keeping Leon Goretzka despite ongoing interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

The Bundesliga side's sporting director, Christian Heidel, hit out at Bayern's public courting of Goretzka earlier this month.

Bayern Munich chairman Karl Heinz-Rummenigge recently hinted that that an agreement with the midfielder is in the advanced stages.

"He has an agreement with them from July 1. We should not have to listen to Munich telling us every day how good the player is". Heidel adds: "We can deal with this situation; it was not a total surprise. We are prepared for it".

"Leon is a professional and he will continue to give everything for Schalke. We did everything possible to keep Leon".
