Five deputies and two other people were shot south of Denver on Sunday morning.

Sheriff Spurlock said this was the first time an officer had been killed during his tenure as sheriff in Douglas County, located about 20 miles south of Denver.

In November, Wyoming College of Law campus officers called the Colorado police to express their concerns about soon-to-become gunman, Matthew Riehl.

Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock told reporters that Riehl had previous contacts with law enforcement "throughout the metro area", but had no criminal history. Riehl, who had barricaded himself in his bedroom, also shot and injured four other officers before a SWAT team eventually killed him. Authorities identified them as deputies Michael Doyle, 28; Taylor Davis, 30; Jeffrey Pelle, 32; and Castle Rock police officer Tom O'Donnell, 41.

"There were well over 100 rounds fired. from the suspect", Spurlock said.

In a statement on Facebook, the Sheriff's Office said they were called to the Copper Canyon Apartments in Highland's Ranch. Spurlock reports that there was no noise when the officers arrived and that they were let into the apartment in question.

The wounded deputies tried to pull the fallen officer, identified as Zack Parrish, out of the line of further gunfire but were unable to due to their own injuries and only managed to "crawl to safety", Spurlock said. Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies responded but found no evidence of a crime and left.
