Crash involving multiple semis sparks massive fire on IN interstate

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, the public information officer for the Versailles district of Indiana State Police, said the chain-reaction crash happened around 4:30 a.m. near the 43 mile marker.

Road repairs will be needed to Interstate 65 southbound after a chemical fire in a semi-truck Wednesday.

"That then in turn pushed that truck and tractor and trailer into another vehicle, also a tractor trailer", Wheeles said.

Once the fire was extinguished, crews were able to clean up the scene. Police say cleanup crews are dealing with an explosion risk.

Sgt. Stephen Wheeles noted that the fire situation on I-65 is continuing to deteriorate, saying that portions of the highway have been closed down. All lanes of I-65 are closed. "They believe that spraying water or trying to contain it at this point is going to cause more problems".
