HUD announces funds for homeless programs

The grants provide crucial housing and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness statewide.

"HUD stands with our local partners who are working each and every day to house and serve our most vulnerable neighbors", HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a statement.

The HUD funding announced today is part of a record $2 billion being awarded to more than 7,300 local housing and service programs nationwide.

California received the largest share of any state, with almost $382.6 million for 900 programs.

In Western New York, HUD estimated there were 1,042 people experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2017, a 3 percent increase since 2016. That includes a focus on Housing First, which moves people quickly from homelessness into permanent housing, rather than using transitional housing as an intermediate step.

The awards consider the cost of funding current programs, how well projects perform and housing costs.

According to a HUD report, homelessness declined in MA in 2017 compared to 2016.

The housing department estimates that the number of people experiencing long term, chronic homelessness, including veterans, has increased. Meanwhile, the report found, homelessness among families with children declined 5.4 percent nationwide. Family homelessness increased by 4 percent.

HUD estimates there were 553,742 persons experiencing homelessness on a single night nationally in 2017, and increase of.7 percent since previous year.

San Francisco had a homeless population of about 7,500 in 2017, according to a Homeless Point-in-Time count survey, or a "homeless census" conducted by the city previous year.

The programs consist of planning agencies known as "continuums of care".
