Katie Couric breaks silence on Matt Lauer: 'I had no idea'

The TV veteran told People that she had "no idea" about the misconduct Lauer is accused of and that the scandal has been "very painful" for her.

"The accounts I've read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it's completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment". I really admire the way Savannah [Guthrie] and Hoda [Kotb] and the entire Today show staff have handled a very hard situation, ' she added.

Couric told People that she was completely shocked by the accusations against Lauer, which included that he allegedly sexually harassed and assaulted NBC employees during his "Today" tenure.

NBC News fired Matt Lauer on November 29 as a result of an internal complaint about "inappropriate sexual behavior".

Lauer was sacked by NBC in November after the network received a "detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior", saying it had reason to believe it wasn't an isolated incident.

Lauer was sacked in November over the allegations of multiple women, one of whom claimed he sexually assaulted her while they worked on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. "It's incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I'm ready to", she wrote, adding, "Thanks for your interest".
