Kobe Bryant was not the only former athlete garnering recognition at this year's awards.

- Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant could get an Oscar to go along with his National Basketball Association championships, MVP Awards and Olympic gold medals.

However the 39-year-old Bryant is already well on his way to making that statement become a reality.

The film was one of five nominated in the Animated Short category on Tuesday.

When Tim Greiving interviewed Bryant for The Times, the player-turned-film-producer recalled why he first phoned Williams before the 2008 National Basketball Association season. National Basketball Association all time great Kobe Bryant received a nomination for his animated short category.

Kobe's film, which famously features a score written by legendary film composer John Williams, is based on his letter that was posted on the Players' Tribune to announce his then-upcoming retirement in 2015.

Kobe will find out if he's adding another piece of hardware to his collection on March 5th at the Academy Awards, airing on ABC.
