Noncigarette tobacco product use is associated with future cigarette smoking

Noncigarette tobacco products, such as electronic cigarettes, hookahs, noncigarette combustible tobacco and smokeless tobacco, are popular among young people and it's important to understand whether they encourage smoking of conventional cigarettes.

For the study, researchers surveyed a nationally representative population of 10,384 teenagers twice: The first survey asked if they had ever smoked or used an e-cigarette or similar product in the past 30 days; the second survey, conducted a year later, asked if they had ever smoked a cigarette.

Recently Dr. Samir Soneji from Dartmouth University and co-workers analyzed data from almost 12,000 adolescents to understand the extent of their online contact with tobacco products and the extent to which it may have affected their behavior.

Oklahoma is spending more to combat tobacco use than most states - but it still isn't close to what experts think is needed. Additionally, use of multiple products was associated with a higher likelihood of initiation of cigarette use than use of a single product.

The research also showed that teens who used more than one tobacco product were more likely to move on to traditional cigarettes.

Watkins noted that the vast majority of adult cigarette smokers - approximately 90% - had smoked their first cigarette by the age of 18 years.

"For example, using tobacco products might expose adolescents to a different social group or social norms around cigarette smoking". Youths who had ever used e-cigarettes, hookah, non-cigarette combustible tobacco, or smokeless tobacco at baseline had higher cigarette ever use at follow-up (19.1, 18.3, 19.2, and 18.8 percent, respectively). A 50-percent reduction in cigarettes per day can help some people get started towards the ultimate goal of being smoke-free.

No more using e-cigarettes - or "vaping" - on school grounds, say UT Health San Antonio officials.

A 2017 meta-analysis of nine studies, also published in JAMA Pediatrics, found e-cigarette use by never-smoking adolescents to be associated with a roughly fourfold greater odds of future cigarette uptake. "And even if kids use these products and don't convert to cigarette smoking, it's not the only relevant health concern".

He added that the clear potential of e-cigarettes and other emerging non-combustible tobacco products to addict teens to nicotine has to be part of the regulatory debate, noting that once teens are addicted, smoking cigarettes may appeal to them as a cheaper, more convenient and more effective method for delivering nicotine. "The estimated health risks of non-cigarette tobacco products should include the addition health consequences of future cigarette use".

Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky President Ben Chandler said these products basically fall into the same camp as cigarettes because both lead to future cigarette use. Researchers analyzed data from almost 12,000 teens.
