The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Thursday evening that Arizona continues to engaged Baltimore about trade talks for Machado, though nothing appears close.

Machado has been linked to many teams across Major League Baseball, including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox. The Chicago White Sox reportedly came the closest to striking an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles in December, while the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals also pursed Machado. If they keep him for the season, they could receive a compensatory pick after he turns down a qualifying offer. Machado made $11.5 million in 2017. Otherwise they might have to deal with a potentially losable grievance - and still have to pay the salary. The Diamondbacks made the playoffs a year ago, winning the National League Wild-Card Game and getting swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Schoop agreed previous year to a $3.475 million contract, but after a Most Valuable Oriole season in 2017 the second baseman will more than double his salary.

The Orioles are considering moving Machado from third base to shortstop this season, at his request. The team was led by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who posted a.966 OPS and had his third top-three NL MVP finish in the last five years.

Machado has one year left on his contract before becoming a free agent. In 2017, Machado batted.259 to go along with 33 home runs and 95 RBIs.
