Seeing Samsung's 'The Wall' MicroLED TV Made Me a Believer

Well, first and foremost, there's something called Modular microLED. This TV's screen's resolution is a huge size of 7680 x 4320, which means there are 33 million pixels in it- four times that of Ultra HD (4K), which is itself four times the resolution of regular old HD.

"Micro" LED is kind of a misleading name, because this new TV technology from Samsung can create truly big screens. Using this unique technology, LG Open Frame OLED displays for business-to-business applications are able to flex for a truly customizable approach that is both a work of art and functional digital signage. But because it is modular, it is much easier to ship and install in a home compared to most of the other very large displays.

It can sink down when the content on screen is in a narrower aspect ratio so viewers can enjoy what they're watching without any black space, while another setting drops the screen even lower, leaving only a thin wide strip that displays smart home information, including music streaming controls. It's probably still a niche technology, but it is interesting. It's not backlit like an LCD TV.

Because each LED can turn on or off individually, MicroLED has the potential for infinite contrast, just like OLED TVs. This can be a problem for OLED screens as, unlike LCD displays which have own backlight, the light for an OLED screen is created by the pixels themselves - which, in the case of an 8K display, are tiny. What's more, unlike OLEDs, MicroLEDs can potentially go brighter and exhibit immunity to ageing and burn in issues. Expect a hefty price tag.Samsung's "The Wall" is a giant 146-inch TV.
