The Versace family has slammed a new television series on the murder of fashion giant Gianni Versace, saying it was based on nothing more than "work of fiction".
"She has no basis to make claims about the intimate personal life of Gianni Versace or other family members". Edgar Ramirez will play Gianni Versace, while Darren Criss will play Cunanan.
Versace was the last person of five killed in a spree by deranged murderer Andrew Cunanan, a social climber and purported escort who was obsessed with glamour and fame.
The Versace family wants to make it very clear that they do not find The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story to be an accurate account of the slain fashion designer's life.

"I made that phone call to her because when Ryan (Murphy) called me, I said to him, 'I have all the reasons to say yes to this, an incredible project, ' and I heard that he was going to do it with respect for the family - that was important for me", she explains to news show Extra. "Instead, in her effort to create a sensational story, she presents second-hand hearsay that is full of contradictions".
Creator Ryan Murphy has defended "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story", saying that the upcoming show is "not a work of fiction". As the season has not yet aired, we can't say just how closely the show will adhere to the events as described in the book.
FX and those behind the show used Maureen Orth's Vulgar Favors as the base of the series, and also stood by its production in a statement.
"She admits it would have been illegal for the person to have reviewed the report in the first place (if it existed at all)", the statement reads.

'American Crime Story, ' FXIt doesn't take long for The Assassination of Gianni Versace to get to the point. "It's based on a very acclaimed nonfiction book called Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth that has been vetted for nearly two decades". Our show is based on her reporting so, in that way, it is not a work of fiction, its a work of non-fiction obviously with docudrama elements. "Of all the possible portrayals of his life and legacy, it is sad and reprehensible that the producers have chosen to present the distorted and bogus version created by Maureen Orth".
The statement said Orth's book was full of speculation, adding the author had never sought information directly from the family and did not have the knowledge to tell the story, including suppositions on Gianni's medical conditions.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premieres on 17 January.
