USA may reimpose sanctions on Iran

During Barack Obama's presidency, these penalties largely cut Iran out of the worldwide financial system, until they were suspended under the nuclear deal.

As part of an agreement with Congress, the president has to sign a waiver suspending the sanctions every 120 days.

"Today, US President Trump is in a state of desperation in the face of the JCPOA and Iran's missile activities and can not convince his European partners to go with his illusions", the Iranian lawmaker said.

"I do want to stress also that this would not entail direct negotiations with the Iranians, this would be something the United States works out with our European partners only", the official added.

"We have sanctioned almost 100 individuals and entities involved with the Iranian regime's ballistic missile program and its other illicit activities", he said.

Under the deal, Iran allows strict limits on its nuclear program in return for easing of economic sanctions.

But he coupled that announcement with new sanctions on 14 Iranian individuals and entities - among them Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, head of Iran's judiciary.

"The president makes clear this is the last such waiver he will issue", an official tells the Washington Post.

The nuclear deal, hammered out in 2015 by six world powers, lifts crippling sanctions on Iran's lifeblood oil and gas industry and the broader economy.

One U.S. official said on Wednesday that if Trump waived the key sanctions under the deal, the administration would impose new, targeted measures against Iranian businesses and people.

"Iran's response will be severe and all consequences of this hostile act will be the responsibility of the United States", it said.

Earlier in October, Trump has threatened to terminate the 2015 Iran nuclear deal if Congress and U.S. allies fail to amend the agreement by fixing serious flaws in significant ways.

Trump in October of a year ago said the US would not certify the Iran nuclear deal, and pushed it to Congress to fix the deal's "serious flaws" in order to protect the American people. Allies like French President Macron also encouraged Trump to stick with the deal. Most of Trump's national security advisers, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, have urged him to waive the sanctions again.

White House is working with Congress on a USA legislation, which seeks provisions to permanently prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and subject Iran's long-range missile program to severe sanctions.

"If Iran does not comply with any of these provisions, American nuclear sanctions would automatically resume", the president's statement said. The administration accuses Larijani of being responsible for the violent crackdown on dissidents in Iran during recent protests.
