Walmart Raising Starting Wages to $11/Hour, Offers Bonuses


The company said the change is in addition to wage increases already planned for many us markets in the coming fiscal year.

Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans have argued that the big corporate tax cut will benefit workers and lead to more investment by United States companies.

The move follows last month's USA tax code overhaul that cut the corporate rate from 35% to a flat 21%.

Walmart's announcement follows companies like AT&T, Wells Fargo & Co and Boeing, which have all promised more pay for workers since the Republican-controlled US Congress passed the biggest overhaul to the US tax code in 30 years.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based company also promised help with adoptions, offering full-time hourly and salaried workers $5,000 per child that can be used for expenses such as adoption agency fees, translation fees and legal or court costs. The bonus is based on length of service, with workers with at least 20 years qualifying for $1,000.

Walmart says the wage increase benefits all hourly USA workers within its stores, including Sam's Club, its website and logistics.

Wal-Mart employs about 2.2 million people globally, with more than 1.5 million in the U.S. and had total global revenue of almost $500 billion a year ago. Hourly workers will be paid between $11 and $24.70 an hour.

The companies say the bonuses they've announced are a way to share some of their bounty with their workers, though in some cases it's a very small percentage of their gains.
