'Zuma will go if Dlamini-Zuma is made interim president'

Newly elected ANC secretary general Ace Magashule addressed the media on Friday‚ in a state-of-readiness briefing ahead of the party's annual January 8 statement‚ which will be delivered by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday.

Several ANC insiders familiar with negotiations on Zuma's future told the Mail and Guardian that one of the key requirements would be that ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma takes over as the country's interim president after he steps down.

This would mean, amongst other things, that Dlamini Zuma would retain presidential benefits after being an acting stateswoman.

Political analyst Lukhona Mnguni believes the option to appoint Dlamini Zuma as interim president should not be presented along factional lines.

The rumour comes as there are growing calls for Zuma to be recalled as state president. But news that Zuma's resignation was not even discussed at the NEC meeting resulted in a dip in the rand, Business Tech reported. "It will be the beginning of us mobilising our people for a decisive victory in 2019", Magashule said.

ANC NEC members who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity says the talks have now ground to a halt.

"There is no substance to the fact that the former chairperson of the AU will be the president".

Magashule also confirmed that Zuma will attend the ANC's 106th anniversary celebration on Saturday.

This will be Ramaphosa's first January 8th Statement since his election as president of the ANC in December.

The secretary general and treasurer general positions are fulltime and are based at ANC headquarters Luthuli House.
