3 dead, 4 injured in Grand Canyon helicopter crash, police say


Over the weekend, a helicopter crash in the Grand Canyon killed three people and severely injured four others, including the pilot. The sightseeing flight was reportedly operated by Papillon Airways and took off from a facility in Las Vegas.

He added: "I had taken my phone and I was zooming in to see if I could see anybody and a lady walked out of the flames and I just lost it".

It wasn't easy for rescuers to get to the helicopter crash site near Quartermaster Canyon, about 60 miles west of Peach Springs, said Francis Bradley, police chief for the Hualapai Nation.

UPDATE ON FEB. 11: The four survivors of the helicopter crash near the Grand Canyon on Saturday have been rescued.

The survivors were airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital by around 2 a.m. Sunday, Bradley said.

The other survivors from the United Kingdom are: Ellie Milward, 29; Jonathan Udall, 32; and Jennifer Barham, 39.

Authorities didn't immediately release the names or ages of the victims.

The single-vehicle crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

"We have reports of some wind", Stein said, but he cautioned that the reports of gusts would need to be corroborated with radar data calibrated at the time of the crash.

Las Vegas photographer Teddy Fujimoto saw the crash first hand as he photographed a wedding. He said he heard gasps and went to check out the commotion coming from about 600 feet (183 meters) below. The pilot, who survived the accident, suffered injuries to at least "one of his limbs", officials said. It is also not known why the helicopter crashed.

Everyone on the helicopter except the pilot was from Britain, the newspaper reported.

"We all extend our condolences to all the family, friends and relatives of this crash", he said Sunday. "We are cooperating fully with NTSB investigators and local authorities".
