Accident causes BA delays at Heathrow


An airport spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that following a serious accident involving two vehicles on our airfield, an airport colleague has passed away".

It said one man suffered a broken shoulder in the incident and was in a non-life threatening condition.

A man in his 40s suffered a cardiac arrest and died, despite attempts to save him at the airfield and on the way to hospital. "He has since died".

"We have apologised to customers for the delay to a small number of our flights this morning, following an incident involving two operational vehicles at the airport", he said.

A Heathrow spokeswoman said: "We are dealing with a serious accident involving two vehicles on the airfield".

Police were called at around 6am on Wednesday following a collision between the vehicles on the taxiway at the airport, which is Europe's biggest, close to Terminal 5.

British media reported passengers had been evacuated from planes after the accident.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating following a fatal collision at Heathrow airport".

The Health and Safety Executive was informed and officers from the Met's serious collision investigation unit were at the scene. We await formal identification.

"The airfield remains open and we will work to minimize disruption to our passengers' journeys". British Airways confirmed that "inaccessible stands" were causing delays to departures. Another 20 British Airways flights were delayed, affecting hundreds of travelers.
