Brawl on 'cruise from hell' leaves 30 injured

The Illawarra Mercury reported that up to 30 passengers were injured in the bloody brawls.

It is not the first time Australian passengers have complained of violence on board cruise ships.

The unidentified extended family of over 20 were involved in multiple violent incidents during what was supposed to be 10-day trip traveling the South Pacific on a Carnival Legend cruise ship, ABC reports.

"Carnival Legend is now on a 10-day South Pacific cruise scheduled to be completed in Melbourne tomorrow where the ship is now homeported".

On Friday, police escorted a host of passengers off the ship and into a waiting bus.

It is unclear whether any arrests have been made.

In a press conference today, Carnival Australia President Sture Myrmell said authorities took swift action removing the offenders.

Passenger Kellie Petersen, who was on the cruise with her husband and their three children, aged 11, 9 and 6, said trouble on board had been "brewing for days".

The ship, which was due to return to Melbourne on Saturday morning, is now docked in the coastal town of Eden, close to the Victoria border.

Women can be seen caught up in the fighting too, with one instance of a woman attempting to shield a male in a head lock from the repeated kicks of a security guard lunging over him.

"He has a head injury", he said.

'He said, "Please Dad, please, call the Federal Police",' he added.

"I could hear a lot of kids crying, women screaming, swearing".

One passenger, called Michael, says he was kicked while lying on the ground and suffering bruisins to his face, back and legs.

Ms Petersen said some violent incidents had occurred in front of children in the pool.

Passengers said the people in the brawl comprised two groups, which had been warring on and off during the cruise.

"We will not be leaving our cabins and are truly scared for our safety and what could happen in the next 24 hours".

Police issued a statement saying: "A planned police operation is underway on the state's south coast".

"A number of people are expected to be removed with assistance from the operational support group".

Carnival told the station that it takes "a zero tolerance approach to excessive behavior that affects other guests".

"The ship's security team is applying our zero tolerance policy in the interests of the safety and comfort of other guests".

The boat was on a 10-day cruise around the South Pacific when two men got into a war of words over tangled feet, which quickly escalated.
