Coral Springs police upset at some Broward deputies for not entering school

The New York Times reported on Wednesday that an officer from the Coral Springs Police Department who responded to the shooting had seen Peterson in a Stoneman Douglas High parking lot. "We checked on that victim, that victim was deceased", said Coral Spring Police Sgt. Nicholas Mazzei.

These reports follow the suspension without pay of a Marjory Stoneman Douglas school resource officer after Israel said video shows him taking up a defensive position during the shooting but never entering the school. Instead, the deputy, school resource officer Scot Peterson, waited outside the building for four of the six minutes the shooting occurred.

Two deputies have been placed on restricted duty pending an internal investigation on how they addressed the warnings, Israel said. That deputy, Scot Peterson, a three-decade veteran of the Broward sheriff's office, resigned after being suspended.

During some of the calls, handled both in person and on the phone, deputies met with Cruz's mother, who died past year. He said last week that his department, which is headquartered just miles down the road from Stoneman Douglas and polices a city where numerous school's students live, will also review its response to the shooting.

The office has said it is investigating how the agency responded to the gunfire that killed 17 students and faculty.

Israel, flanked by two of his top aides, appeared emotional Thursday during the news conference in which he described Peterson's conduct. Both calls have since prompted internal affairs probes, the sheriff's office said.

The FBI received a tip last month from someone close to Cruz that he owned a gun and had talked of committing a school shooting, the bureau revealed last week, acknowledging it had failed to investigate.

In the 2016 case, officers received "third hand information" from a neighbor's son that Cruz planned to "shoot up" an unknown school.

More than a week after Cruz roamed the halls armed with an AR-15 rifle, shooting and killing, questions remain on whether law enforcement agencies could have done anything to prevent the massacre. Please know that this issue will be addressed, and the truth will come out in time.

"What I saw was a deputy arrive. take up a position and he never went in", Israel said, adding Peterson should have "went in". "What matters is that when we in law enforcement arrive at an active shooter, we go in and address the target and that's what should have been done".

Officials have said they are reviewing how they handled earlier warnings about Cruz, including the fumbled Federal Bureau of Investigation tip.
