Giants New OC Job Isn't to Call Plays, But Groom Future

The New York Giants have hired Mike Shula as their new offensive coordinator on Tuesday, as first reported by Kimberly Jones of NFL Network.

Manning, no doubt, managed a miraculous and legendary Super Bowl escape of a Patriots' pass rush in Super Bowl XLII, hitting David Tyree for the famous helmet-catch on the Giants' game-winning Super Bowl XLII drive.

The former Alabama head coach and quarterback spent the past seven seasons with the Panthers, beginning as a quarterbacks coach in 2011, before becoming the offensive boss in 2013.

During Shula's five seasons as offensive coordinator, the Panthers won the NFC South three times, went to the playoffs four times, won the conference championship once and posted a 51-28-1 regular-season record. But the Vikings denied New York's request to interview Stefanski, which National Football League teams can do for assistant coaches under contract as long as they aren't interviewing for a head-coach position.

Highvista Strategies Llc increased its stake in Ptc Inc (PTC) by 12.85% based on its latest 2017Q3 regulatory filing with the SEC. The institutional investor owned 81,578 shares of the company's stock after selling 7,229 shares during the period.

Shula is now Pat Shurmur's offensive caddie. And it is of course a coach's job to build a team around the personnel he has, so McAdoo's and Jerry Reese's judgment that the problem was Manning - and not the offensive line - ultimately led to their firings on December 4.

The offensive coordinator position is of the utmost importance despite the expectation that Shurmur will call plays during games.

But before Shurmur and Shula groom Manning's successor, their task in 2018 will be to win with the veteran quarterback himself. Former assistant offensive line coach Lunda Wells will also return, albeit in a new role as tight end coach. Shurmur and Stefanski worked together in Minnesota in 2016-17. Otherwise, Carolina's offense was middle of the pack under Shula.

Case Keenum ran play action extremely well and often for Shurmur last season in Minnesota. The team has not reached 30 points in a game since the 2015 season finale and has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2008. He would be an intriguing candidate despite having no experience working with quarterbacks. The Giants will have last year's third-round pick Davis Webb and potentially the No. 2 overall pick on the roster.

US Senate begins rare open debate on immigration
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said the Senate will vote on any proposal that garners 60 votes. In his own remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer expressed opposition to such a sweeping approach.

Now Shurmur, 52, and Shula, 52, have risen to this level of the coaching ranks because they've coached all types of QBs.

The move reunites Shula and new Giants GM Dave Gettleman from their time in Carolina.

Shula's relationship with Newton certainly had its ups and downs. Shula fits into that mix, right alongside Shurmur.
