Google reportedly shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017

Google recently acquired Taiwan-based HTC's smartphone design team for $1.1 billion.

According to IDC's numbers, Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018.

With the disastrous launch of the Pixel 2 range of smartphones, it seemed that all of the hard work Google had done building its reputation in the handset world had been undone.

The Reds face Porto this evening in the Champions League last 16 and are hoping to bring a positive result back to Anfield. Following the draws held in December, the tournament has some mouth-watering fixtures in store for us in the Round of 16.

Doubling the number of units shipped is a good step for Google even if you don't take that number at face value.

The Android versus iOS war may often be phrased in terms of Pixel vs iPhone, but new sales stats for Google's Pixel suggest there's a long way to go before Apple needs to be anxious. In comparison, between their release in April 2017 and August of the same year, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 plus sold 20 million units-and those were just two of the many phones released by Samsung that year.

Apple also has a retail empire, with 499 stores across 22 countries. Apple also has deals with all the major carriers in the U.S., putting iPhones in even more retail locations with even more salespeople. However, looking at the big picture, Google still has a lot of catching up to do.

The Google Pixel smartphones were supposed to be Android's answer to Apple's iPhone.

Past year saw Google unveil the Pixel 2 and 2 XL handsets to take over from the original Pixel phones that launched back in 2016. That's not a massive number, but it shows great growth for the company's lineup. "The Essential Phone only shipped 88,000 units in 2017".

All of Google's recent moves prove that, more than ever, Google wants to be more like Apple. Google's cheapest phone is last year's Pixel 1, which got a $100 price drop when the Pixel 2 came out and is technically for sale for $549 (although it's still sold out). People are much more willing to buy a cheaper product, and Google's nascent hardware brand might have a harder time convincing people to pay top-dollar. A big marketing push would definitely help, and so would distribution through major carriers.
