Weinstein's lawyers had cited comments made by Streep and Jennifer Lawrence while trying to get the proposed class-action lawsuit - filed by six women - dropped.

In a 26-page memorandum of law accompanying yesterday's motion of dismissal, lawyers from Los Angeles' Kupferstein Manuel LLP and New York City's Morrison Cohen LLP wrote "these proposed class definitions are fatally overbroad as to be not ascertainable".

Weinstein's documents point out an interview by Lawrence in which she said, "Just speaking for myself, I had known him since I was 20, and he had only ever been nice to me-except for the moments that he wasn't, and then I called him an a-hole, and we moved on".

"The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility", Streep said in her statement, "and if there is any justice left in the system he will pay for them".
