The day comes before Ash Wednesday, which symbolises the start of Lent. Shrove Monday is also known across the world as Rose Monday, Carnival Monday, Collop Monday, Merry Monday or Hall Monday. The pancake aspect is not as widely observed in the United States as it is in England.

Pancake Day and its races form a key part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations as a chance for large numbers of people, often in fancy dress, to race down streets tossing pancakes. In particular, the need to use up rich ingredients such as butter, milk, sugar and eggs before Lent gave rise to the tradition of eating pancakes on this day.

Lent is a religious observance and ends on March 29 ahead of Easter on Sunday, April 1.
