Still, realizing "that Harvey had done something untoward to Rose, if not illegal", Messick reported the incident to her bosses, who later settled it without Messick's knowledge. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and battling with depression for years, she has died at the age of 50.

Over the past couple of months, Rose claimed that Harvey raped her back in 1997 while they were at the Sundance Film Festival that year. And Messick soon accepted an offer to work at Weinstein's studio, Miramax, raising accusations that she was complicit in the alleged sexual assault. The family also says that the email was released without her consent. The family says she made a decision to remain silent during McGowan's public lashing of her character so not to undermine all the women who were coming forward with their stories of abuse. But added that she also had been distraught from the recent spotlight on her after details emerged on alleged sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein, saying she "became collateral damage in an already horrific story".

"Jill Messick was a mother of two children, a loving wife and partner, a dear friend to many and a smart entertainment executive".

McGowan said that after believing Messick believed her and "put her arms around me" she began to believe she'd lost the support of Messick and her management team.

They also went on to say that Messick had suffered, especially with her name being tainted and her reputation tarnished by McGowan's allegations.

It read: "The speed of disseminating information has carried mistruths about Jill as a person, which she was unable and unwilling to challenge. She never chose to be a public figure; that choice was taken away from her".

In October, Affleck said that he was aware of Weinstein's behavior, but he did not know that he sexually abused McGowan.

It was especially painful, the family's statement said, that the headlines came just as Messick was rebounding after a manic episode five years earlier. It wasn't long after that Jill got her post as Rose's manager.

After-hours messages left with representatives seeking comment from Weinstein and McGowan were not immediately returned.

"As we collectively seek to take action in an effort to right the wrongs so brazenly and inhumanely repeated for a generation, we must not forget one simple truth: Words have power", the statement continues.
