Shaun White's Unbelievable First Halfpipe Run Is Going Viral

Shaun White claimed his third halfpipe snowboarding title at Pyeongchang 2018 today to secure the United States' 100th gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games.

If White wins in the finals, which will be broadcast Tuesday night in the US, he could claim the 100th gold medal for the winter Olympics since 1924. Two former Winter Youth Olympic Games athletes also impressed the judges.

White had responded with the second ideal score of his career in the pre-Games US trials, a result which drew some criticism from contemporaries, including Australian bronze medallist Scotty James, who intimated the American's vast fame precluded the ability to make a subjective judgement. He also did his signature double McTwist.

We are just moments away from White's second run. But in the end he took home another silver medal to go with the one he collected at Sochi 2014.

But two other boarders from a younger generation surpassed him in their second runs.

Unfortunately for the youngster, White stole his thunder in spectacular style responding with a sensational final run scoring 97.75.

White's belief that he can challenge the world's best skateboarders in Tokyo is not as outlandish as it might sound at first. He told reporters at the time that he felt like he was "burning out". "They motivated me to send it on that last one".

"Honestly it's one of the most challenging runs I've ever done". I didn't even link the combination, the 14 to 14 [back-to-back 1440s] until I got here this morning. "I'm just so proud of myself, which I never say". "I am who I am and I'm proud of who I am".

The men's snowboard halfpipe event is now being broadcast on NBC.

White had a tough number to beat in his final run, forcing him not only to have a clean run, but to take some risky jumps.
