In an announcement last night, the game's executive producer Joe Neate said that one of the key goals of the closed beta was to learn what would happen at high concurrent player numbers.

This test begins February 16 at 2 a.m. There will also be more tests being conducted in the coming weeks, and once they are over, the developer confirmed that another beta will be held closer to the game's launch. This test is specifically created to stress servers and test some of the networking changes made since the recent closed beta. No additional content will be included in this test, and Rare isn't looking for gameplay feedback.

As such, the tests won't be reflective of the final product and will most likely contain issues such as sessions getting interrupted, problems with using shops in-game, and the inability to join the game at certain times throughout the weekend. Rare hasn't specified whether it will be an open beta for everyone to try out or a closed beta like before, but did mention it would give players "a taste of the wider Sea of Thieves experience".

The post concludes by confirming another beta will take place before Sea of Thieves releases.
