Engine woes: Aviation watchdog grounds 11 Airbus planes of IndiGo, GoAir

However, in a late evening statement, IndiGo said it will have to ground only six aircraft.

The directive which was issued at around 4.30 PM read that 320neos fitted with PW engines beyond ESN 450 would be grounded with immediate effect.

"Hundreds of passengers were stranded after a number of flights were cancelled by both IndiGo and GoAir in the wake of some aircraft going out of operations due to the DGCA order", a source said.

DGCA's move comes after Pratt and Whitney did not give a firm commitment in its latest communication as to when issues with the engines post Serial Number 450 will be resolved and informed that all affected engines will be replaced by early June this year.

It said it will be in touch with stakeholders and review the situation in due course and when the issue is addressed by European regulator EASA and P&W.

The European Aviation Safety Agency has ruled that operations with one defective engine should be permitted provided affected planes don't undertake extended flights over water, where they're more distant from diversionary airports in the event of an emergency.

DGCA said there had been three such incidents in 2018 - two involving IndiGo and one with an GoAir aircraft.

Clarifying its position, Pratt & Whitney in a statement said: "We are working closely with our customers to minimize disruption".

According to the Pacific Fertility website, egg-freezing costs $8,345 for the first round and $6,995 for each subsequent round. Staff members at the clinic then spent days going through patient records to verify which patients were affected.

The DGCA official said since then, there have been three cases of the in-flight shutdown of A-320 Neos fitted with one affected PW1100 engine. The corrective action has been approved and we have already begun to deliver production engines with the upgraded configuration.

Under the Pratt plan, all defective components would be replaced by early June, requiring some planes to fly with one affected engine for nearly three more months.

On February 13, DGCA had said that it was monitoring engine glitches to ensure that safety is not compromised at any time.

In February, the United States aviation regulator said the Pratt & Whitney engines pose a shutdown risk, following similar action by European regulators that month. The aircraft landed safely on one engine with no injuries.
