Israeli PM Netanyahu Describes America In One Word

Israel's government reached a compromise on Tuesday to avoid early elections, overcoming a Cabinet crisis over a controversial bill to exempt ultra-Orthodox Jews from compulsory military service.

Earlier in the morning, the government's Ministerial Committee for Legislation voted in favor of the bill following overnight talks between Netanyahu and ultra-Orthodox coalition partners for an agreed version of the bill.

Lieberman has said that he would only support legislation that is drafted by a committee of military officials.

The political woes come as Netanyahu is battling corruption allegations.

The prime minister on Monday attempted to shut down rumors that new elections are his way of garnering support ahead of a possible indictment on corruption charges, insisting that he has no desire to go to the polls.

"Prime Minister, to topple a right-wing government over nothing would be a historic mistake similar in size to the fall of the Shamir government in 1992", she tweeted, referring to the collapse of the coalition, led by Likud's Yitzhak Shamir, and the election that resulted in victory for Labor's Yitzhak Rabin. "We'll vote against the enlistment law", he said.

Israel's parliament was expected to take up key measures later in the day in what could signal whether Netanyahu's right-wing coalition will survive for now or head towards elections that could be held as early as June.

Coalition chiefs on Tuesday evening hailed the compromise deal achieved at the last minute which seems to have solved a coalition crisis that had nearly dismantled the government, with Netanyahu taking credit for the agreement. Either the defense minister tells Sofa Landver to abstain in the vote on the Draft Law, or the prime minister decides not to fire Sofa Landver, even if she votes against it.

Coalition members, including Lieberman's Yisrael Beitenu party, will be able to vote against the conscription bill, but that will likely not be enough to prevent its approval.

Although Lieberman has enjoyed a healthy working relationship with Netanyahu and his similarly conservative Likud party, a schism has persistently existed in the coalition between secular parties like Yisrael Beiteinu and orthodox parties like The Jewish Home, Shas and UTJ.

Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, in turn, said he will pull his party (Kulanu) from the coalition if the budget fails to pass this week.

"There is no more interesting post than the post of defence minister. I have the deepest feelings about the United States", Netanyahu said.

President Donald Trump reportedly informed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States will not be flexible with European powers in negotiating changes to the stipulations and limitations around Iran's nuclear program.

The political tremor comes as Netanyahu and his close associates are involved in at least four corruption cases.
