Karnataka lokayukta P. Vishwanatha Shetty stabbed inside office, attacker arrested


"The accused has been taken into custody", Indian Express quoted state home minister Ramalinga Reddy as saying.

The attacker, identified as Tejas Sharma, was apprehended immediately following the attack. He is said to be an advocate, based on his entry in the register at the Lokayukta's office.

After being stabbed, Justice Shetty, 74, fell to the floor bleeding. After the attack, there were questions about security in the Lokayukta office.

Authorities were clueless as to how a man carrying a knife managed to enter the office of the Lokayukta.

Further inquiry is on, Commissioner of Police T Suneel Kumar told ANI.

According to reports, Sharma had entered the office at 12.45 pm on the excuse of lodging a complaint and after five minutes, the staff outside heard screams.

The Lokayukta post, ahead of Shetty's appointment, was vacant in Karnataka since December 2015, following the unceremonious exit of his predecessor Justice (retd) Y Bhaskar Rao, who was accused of corruption and extortion.
