Manchester United's Michael Carrick confirms retirement after 2017/18 season

"That's pretty much where I am at". He's made more than 700 professional appearances over the course of that long career, and won, among other things, five Premier League titles. That's where I'm at and you have got to accept it.

On announcing his decision to retire, Carrick said: "I think it's pretty much already been said, to be honest with you". Despite these worldwide appearances, the midfielder has only made one appearance at a major tournament for England, often being overlooked in favour of the likes of Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard. We're still talking about it, to be honest, so there's nothing totally confirmed as yet.

Carrick was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for #Manchester United from Tottenham for £14m in 2006, and has made over 450 appearances for the #RedDevils since then.

Carrick was appointed United captain in the summer and is in his 12th season at Old Trafford.

"Obviously, I had the problem in the Burton game, when it started during the second half, and then had a few tests after that", the ex-Spurs man said. As such, he's likely to take on a coaching role from next season - discussions are ongoing but "it's been kind of sorted out".

"I'm clear now, it took a bit of time to get over".
