Moto X5 Reportedly Cancelled, But Moto Z Series Survives Amid Layoffs

Now that we've established that the MotoMod-compatible Moto Z family of smartphones is still alive, let's focus our attention on those mods.

Following our report yesterday that Motorola is laying off a significant portion of its engineering staff in Chicago, Android Police is now out with some details on what exactly this will mean. The Moto X5 was set to succeed the mid-range Moto X4 smartphone that came with a glass and metal design along with stock Android software and a solid performance. Alongside it, a leak earlier this year suggested that the company would launch the Moto Z3 and the Moto G6. The Moto Z2 Force was the latest device from the Moto Z line, and it was released the last summer.

The domestic indices were trading in range on Friday taking cues from their Asian counterparts. On the currency front, the rupee closed flat at 65.17 against the United States dollar.

News surrounding the layoffs isn't surprising as Lenovo had announced late past year that it planned to do so over the next few quarters. The official statement also added that the move that Lenovo announced a year ago will continue to happen "over the next few quarters" impacting less than 2 percent of its workforce across the globe. Today, Lenovo told Engadget that the reports are inaccurate in the fact that the layoffs did not impact half of Motorola's workforce in Chicago, but much less.

As for the Moto Mods, the company will continue to make products that can "actually turn a profit" rather than work on "eccentric" Mods. The number of "employment reductions" was not mentioned however.

This became very plausible because Liangchen Checn, the creator of Keyboard Moto Mod implied that there is not a direct contact in Chicago, because of the cuts. One of those ways looks to be a VR headset, courtesy of VentureBeat writer Evan Blass. Given Motorola's investment in Moto Mods and the Moto Z lineup and the success of the Moto G line it is not entirely surprising to see the Moto X line canned.
