Billionaire J.B. Pritzker won the Democratic nomination for IL governor on Tuesday, defeating a member of a famous political family and a self-described "middle-class candidate" to advance to what could be the most expensive governor's race in US history.

Tuesday, Rauner almost lost his re-election bid to state Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), who came less than 21,000 votes of seizing the Republican nomination despite being heavily outspent by the incumbent governor. Three candidates have been leading a crowded field: venture capitalist and billionaire entrepreneur J.B. Pritzker, who has led infrequent polls; progressive state Sen. But his ongoing spat with Madigan and other legislative Democrats left the state without a budget for two years while billions of dollars of debt piled up. Rauner declared victory as he held a 52%-to-48% lead over Ives with about votes in 83% of precincts counted statewide.

"For those of you around IL who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear: I have heard you", Rauner said.

"It is still one of the most historic nights ever in the state of Illinois", Ives told supporters at her gathering in Glen Ellyn as she conceded late Tuesday.

Coupled with Rauner's signing of bills that limit local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities, and that allowed transgender people to change the sex noted on their birth certificates, Ives' supporters lambasted Rauner as a "RINO" - Republican in name only.

Pritzker got 45 percent of the vote while each of his main Democratic rivals, Daniel Biss and Chris Kennedy, each got about 25, give or take. Personal wealth solidified Rauner and Pritzker's front-runner status but also made them frequent targets for opponent attacks.

In an interview with The Associated Press after the race call, Pritzker called the victory "amazing" and said he's "really excited". In spite of Ives' surprising results, Rauner will seek to extend his time in office for another four years following a rocky first term in office.

The governor blasted the almost half-million-dollar ad buy as an attempt by Washington liberals to "interfere" in the primary, contending it was a sign that the other side had identified him as the tougher candidate to beat in November.

But far more damaging were ads that Rauner ran against Pritzker after wiretap audio surfaced of him talking with former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
