A Missouri police officer who was shot and killed and two others who were wounded had been sent to the wrong house following a 911 call, authorities said Wednesday.

That's when the suspect, later identified as James E. Waters, 37, opened fire, killing Morton and wounding two other officers.

At midnight, a SWAT team entered the house to find Waters dead.

"It is a coincidence they were called to that specific address", Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe told Fox News. Police say they found Widger's purse and inside of it was a bag containing what looked like marijuana, methamphetamine and pills.

The address error was likely due to a glitch in the 911 call technology, Stosberg said, though he did not elaborate.

There's been a dramatic turn to a story out of Clinton, Mo., where three police officers were shot Tuesday night - one fatally.

"We are people and we get to go home every night and being in service you don't know that". The officers made a decision to check inside anyway to make sure no one was in danger. Waters was the only person in the home. His cause of death and reason for shooting the officers is unclear.

"We can just hear two females arguing", the dispatcher responds.

"We're responsible for putting them out there", Comer said.

A short time later, an officer can be heard saying, "Shots fired".

Once the scene had cleared and as they continued to investigate, police asked for a search warrant to collect evidence from the Grandriver Street home where Morton died.

Authorities said Wednesday that the Clinton officers were actually sent to the wrong house.

Bettencourt and Kasper were treated for bullet wounds - one in an arm and the other in a shoulder.

The names of two of the officers and suspect have not been released.

Waters' daughter, Lakeviona Waters, told CNN affiliate KSHB that her father suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

"Cops would come over every so often because of whatever was going on inside that house", she told KCUR. "I don't think so", he responds. Her bond has been set at $25,000.

She was arrested today on possession of drugs with intent to distribute.

The incident occurred exactly seven months after Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael was shot during a traffic stop and later died at a hospital.

He worked as a full-time Clinton police officer from February 12, 2015, to January 10, 2017.
