Tennessee Titans to sign former New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler

Cornerback Malcolm Butler intends to sign with the Tennessee Titans on a five-year, $61 million deal that includes a guarantee of $30 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

In four seasons with the Patriots, Butler totaled eight interceptions, 50 passes defended (including 12 or more in his last three years) and 209 combined tackles.

The defensive-minded coach coordinated in New England from 2012-17. He rose to unexpected fame with his Super Bowl interception, and the team showed its faith in him the following season, in 2015, by elevating him to the No. 1 spot on the depth chart to replace departed free agent Darrelle Revis. In essence, Belichick decided that safety Jordan Richards (first half) and cornerback Johnson Bademosi (second half) gave the Patriots a better chance to win as the sixth defensive back in the dime package over Butler, who had played 98 percent of the defensive snaps in the regular season.

He started 15 of 16 games in New England, but did not play a single down in the team's Super Bowl loss to the Eagles.

But just over a month ago, Butler rode the bench as the Patriots ultimately fell in Super Bowl LII, a healthy scratch that has yet to be explained in detail.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Butler turned 28 on March 2.

Butler will join Logan Ryan and Adoree' Jackson as the top cornerbacks on the Titans roster, signaling three big investments made by Robinson at the all-important position over the past two offseasons.

Butler's departure leaves the Patriots with a need at cornerback this offseason.
