This is for benefit of you too, Raila assures Nasa chiefs

Cracks in the National Super Alliance widened on Sunday following revelations that opposition leader Raila Odinga will not attend a meeting of co-principals on Monday.

The Jubilee leaders were also quick to allay fears that the new alliance between Kenyatta and Odinga presented a new political matrix in the 2022 elections.

But Mr Odinga defended his move, saying it was the best option given the challenges facing the Opposition in recent days.

"A man can only take blackmail for so long", the source said. "All the three care about is 2022 just because of an agreement that bars Mr Odinga from contesting the presidency".

On Friday, Kenyatta and Odinga agreed to work together to advance national healing and cohesion after a divisive election period last fall.

Earlier in February, 11 Western envoys led by United States ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec asked the opposition to acknowledge President Kenyatta's legitimacy before they could engage him in the dialogue demanded by Mr Odinga after last year's contested elections. "Stoking and threatening violence are not acceptable, nor are extra-Constitutional measures to seize power", they said, apparently referring to Mr Odinga's "People's President" push.

President Kenyatta was sworn in for a second term last November after he won an election re-run in October, which Mr Odinga had boycotted.
