Vince McMahon's XFL Has Competition From a New League Launching in 2019

Former Buffalo Bills' general manager Bill Polian is the co-founder of the league.

Sports agent Donald Yee announced last year his plans for Pacific Pro Football, a league with four teams based in Southern California that would give 18- to 21-year-olds a professional alternative to college football.

The news is fairly significant.

Details of the XFL re-launch were sketchy.

From the sound of ESPN's reporting, the league seems to be aiming to be more like the stable CFL than the exciting but volatile XFL.

ESPN '30 for 30′ filmmaker set to run Alliance of American Football league to rival XFL

"We believe fans and players are what's most important, so our approach is simple - we've created an Alliance where fans and players share in the success of their teams", Charlie Ebersol said, via variety.com. "We're looking for those Kurt Warners working in grocery stores and we think we will find them".

The Alliance of American Football will be broadcast on CBS.

Namely, there will be no kickoffs. The offense will take the ball from its own 25 yard-line. The losing team will just start on their own 35-yard-line with fourth-and-10. If not, then the other team will gain possession.

Some AAF rules will be different than the NFL's. However, it's hard to forecast how penalties might impact the strategy of such plays for both sides. There will be no extra-point kicks - only 2-point conversions.

There appears to be a large number of football minds involved in the endeavor.

Other advisers include Dick Ebersol and former National Football League players Hines Ward and Justin Tuck.

Unlike McMahon, whose announcement came without a media plan, Charlie Ebersol said that his league, made up of players who didn't make the cut for the NFL, will have the initial contest and the championship game on CBS and one game a week on CBS Sports Network.

The eight host cities will be announced in the next few months. The locations of the franchises are scheduled to be announced in the next three months. But it won't be the only new professional football league - or even the first to begin play. Considering the National Football League has been trying to limit certain elements of contact during play, especially on kickoffs, the new approach to eliminating kickoffs altogether might find its way into a discussion in a board room on Park Avenue quite soon.

There have been several short-lived football leagues before, including the United Football League, United States Football League and XFL. However, another of Vince McMahon's ventures is under threat from another alliance. The AAF doesn't view itself as a league that is competing with the NFL, but one that will be complimentary to it.
