Amazon will now deliver packages to Prime members' cars

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) partners with General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Volvo (OTCPK:VOLVY) to deliver packages to the trunks of cars. Packages can put in the vehicle's trunk or out of plain sight.

Amazon Key enables in-car deliveries by linking your Amazon Prime account with your Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac Owner Center account and active connected vehicle service plan. If you're not available to receive a package, you can have it stowed inside your locked vehicle. Additional eligible delivery addresses can be added to the Amazon address book at any time.

The collaboration represents a considerable scaling-up and maturing of Volvo's digital consumer services via the Volvo On Call service platform, available via an easy-to-use app on your smartphone. Customers download the Amazon Key App and link their Amazon account with their Volvo On Call account. Additionally, it's only offered to those driving cars with model years of 2015 or newer made by Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and Volvo. For model year 2015-2017, Volvo offers a free 1-year subscription to Prime members, and for model year 2018 or newer, Volvo offers a free 4-year subscription. No additional hardware or devices are required.

The in-car delivery comes at no extra cost for Prime members.

The in-car delivery service is easy and convenient. Once setup is complete and the delivery location has been registered, customers can shop on Amazon.com and select the "In-Car" delivery option at checkout. On the day of the delivery, they'll be given a four-hour delivery window. "It won't tell them where their next delivery is until that happens", said Shrivastava.

It's the same service that Amazon started offering a while ago, where customers can have items delivered and placed inside of their homes. To check eligibility and sign up for Amazon Key In-Car Delivery, visit www.amazon.com/keyincar. If sending a package to your auto is the only option, a second attempt at delivery will be made on the next business day. We will let you know when your vehicle is relocked, and you'll get a final notification confirming the delivery is complete. "In-car delivery gives customers that same peace of mind and allows them to take the Amazon experience with them".

If the delivery driver is not able to locate your vehicle, the driver will deliver to your selected backup option.

So instead of fretting that I'd miss the delivery and potentially have the package stolen, or having to have it redelivered, it was there waiting for me when I got back from a day of errands. Upon delivery, the Amazon Key app will notify the customer and an activity feed will show when the vehicle was unlocked and relocked again.
