Romaine lettuce tainted with e. coli has sickened 84 people in 19 states, including 18 in Pennsylvania, which continues to have the most cases, according to an update issued Wednesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The case count by state in this E. coli O157:H7 HUS outbreak is: Alaska (5), Arizona (5), California (13), Colorado (2), CT (2), Georgia (1), Idaho (10), IL (1), Louisiana (1), MI (2), Missouri (1), Montana (7), New Jersey (7), NY (2), OH (3), Pennsylvania (18), South Dakota (1), Virginia (1), and Washington (2).

No one should buy or eat any romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, officials said.

To this point, 31 people nationwide have been hospitalized as a result of the outbreak, including five who have developed kidney failure.

And the CDC still pegs Yuma, Arizona-grown romaine lettuce as the outbreak's source.

"Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you're uncertain about where it was grown", the CDC said. But investigators still have not identified a common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine.

"We just pulled them all off the shelves right away threw everything away and then they said they would tell us what they would want us to do after that but safety was the first concern they didn't want us selling anything that could be contaminated", said Sherrie Gentzlar. While E. coli can survive a good scrubbing, the idea that animal poop makes it onto your lettuce should be enough to prompt you to keep your leafy greens under the faucet for at least a few extra seconds.

Ninety-six percent of the 67 people interviewed said they ate romaine lettuce. The infected romaine lettuce has been tracked to Yuma, Arizona, which is a popular growing region for the vegetable.
