Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony for Congress released

The world's largest social-media company didn't do enough to prevent its tools from being used for harm, especially in terms of fake news, foreign interference in elections, hate speech, developer policies and data privacy, Zuckerberg, Facebook's co-founder, said.

First, it would create a new model between the industry and the academia and second, it would put light on issues like Facebook tools being misused, something that allegedly happened during Brexit and the United States presidential election.

Zuckerberg said: "We've made a lot of mistakes building this feature, but we've made even more with how we've handled them".

"Yes, I am relieved, yes, because that's scary", Walker said.

Last week, Facebook said Cambridge Analytica may have had information on about 87 million Facebook users without the users' knowledge. On Tuesday, he will appear before a joint hearing of two Senate committees, while on Wednesday the 33-year-old exec will be grilled by a House committee. "We did this because the website may have misused some of your Facebook information by sharing it with a company called Cambridge Analytica", the image reads.

The steps are created to deter online information warfare and election meddling that USA authorities have accused Russian Federation of pursuing, Zuckerberg said on Friday.

Facebook has taken a series of proactive steps to make up for massive lapses in protecting user data, as lawmakers signaled they intend to get tough on privacy.

In an interview with the Guardian last month New Zealand's prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, said she continued to operate a Facebook account, and had no additional security or protections than any other New Zealander.

Facebook insists that the research effort will use annonymized, privacy-protected data for the sole goal of understanding and improving social media's impact on society.

These include restrictions on the amount of data released to third-party apps that users sign up for through Facebook; a pre-approval process for apps that want to ask users for personal information, along with contracts for them to adhere to; and barriers to prevent apps from reaching into the data of a user's friends without their consent.

Senator Nelson said he believes Mr Zuckerberg is taking the upcoming congressional hearings seriously "because he knows there is going to be a hard look at regulation".

"There is more work to do, but we are committed to confronting abuse and to putting you in control of your privacy", it says.

Mark Zuckerberg says the company has a responsibility to make sure what happened with Cambridge Analytica doesn't happen again.

Facebook has been scrambling to win back user trust since the scandal erupted, announcing that it would implement changes like labeling political ads and verifying pages with many followers.

"The naivete on Zuckerberg's part was allowing guys like this researcher from Cambridge University to access data that was in-turn provided to Cambridge Analytica, which ultimately wound up in the Trump campaign", said Magid.

McCully says the information lifted from your online profile reveals enough about you that it could be used to steal your identity.

Technology industry officials said they also expected Zuckerberg's testimony to be long on political point scoring and short on legislative ideas. Cowen reissued a "buy" rating and issued a $220.00 price objective on shares of Facebook in a report on Thursday, January 4th.
