Football field-sized asteroid zooms dangerously close to Earth

Its closest approach to our planet occurred at around 2:41 a.m. EDT (06:41 GMT) on Sunday, when the asteroid came just 192,000 kilometers (119,500 miles) away from Earth's atmosphere. The orbit appears to extend to the inner part of the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

That's significantly smaller than the 2018 GE3 asteroid.

The April asteroid, however, traveling at a speed of about 66,000 miles per hour, would have likely broken down "due to friction with the air" as soon as it entered Earth's atmosphere, EarthSky reported.

Nearly a day later, asteroid 2018 GE3 came whizzing by at about half the distance between Earth and the moon, notes Fox News.

A poster shared by friends and family on Facebook said their last known location was the "Klamath-Redwood National Park area". Autopsies are expected to be performed this week as part of the Coroner's investigation into the incident.

The football field-size asteroid darted past us at half the lunar moon distance on Sunday, hours after it was first spotted.

CNET said 2018 GE3 was among the largest space rocks to come so close to Earth.

This class of asteroids that includes 2018 GE3 is named after the 1908 Tunguska event, when a almost 200-foot-wide impactor leveled a Siberian forest, exploding with an estimated force equivalent to the largest hydrogen bombs ever built, between 15-30 megatons.

NASA estimates that the passerby visitor had a diameter of 48 to 110 meters, that is, three to six times as large as the other asteroid in 2013 that exploded over Chelyabinsk in Russian Federation, injuring more than 1,200 people and causing damage to buildings up to 93 km. "Should the 2018 GE3 have impacted Earth, it would have caused a significant amount of damage, however, it would have been regional, not global damage", a space and weather website reported.

That hearing came after Alfie's parents failed to reach an agreement with Alder Hey bosses about their son's end of life plan. He sought to overturn Mr Justice Hayden's decision last week that Alfie's parents may not remove him from Alder Hey hospital.

It's a general rule to trust governments and space agencies to be able to do things like detect oncoming asteroids that might impact the earth at some point.

Was Earth in danger? Astronomers have increased their programs to seek near-Earth asteroids like 2018 GE3, but sometimes - like this time and as in 2013 with the Chelyabinsk event - asteroids do still surprise us.

Although, asteroids are hard to track, it's rare for one to come so close to Earth without being picked up well in advance.
