Ford confirms next-gen Focus for Australia

Ford has revealed the all-new global Focus lineup, including a sedan, estate/wagon, and hatchback for Europe, China and the U.S. market.

Order books for the 2019 Ford Focus have opened in Europe while sales are set to commence from July this year.

The all-new Focus is the first vehicle globally to be based on Ford's new C2 platform created to enhance crash performance, deliver more interior space for Ford's mid-size models without negatively impacting exterior dimensions, and support improved aerodynamics for better fuel-efficiency.

Ford on Tuesday took the covers off a redesigned Focus in hatchback, sedan and wagon body styles.

In Europe, customers will get a luxurious Focus Vignale trim and sporty ST-Line version, as well as "adventure-oriented" Active and upscale Titanium trims; China will get the ST-Line and Titanium models.

Engine options include Ford's award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol plus a new 1.5-litre petrol. The new Focus will reach showrooms in the autumn. In Europe, the Focus will use either the 1.5-liter EcoBoost or a 2.0-liter diesel engine. Rumor has it the warm hatch will be bitten by the downsizing bug as it will eschew the 2.0-liter engine to make room for a smaller 1.5-liter unit.

Unlike other cars that rely on steering to change the beam of the headlights, the world first technology on the new Ford Focus uses cameras in the windscreen to scan the road ahead to detect corners and roundabouts that are up to 65 metres away. It also gives the vehicle a sleeker, fresher look thanks to a more raked roofline as well as more chiseled body lines. Down the line, if all goes to plan, Ford's goal is to increase the modularity of its parts, so that different engines, components like sunroofs, and electrical systems can be shared just like auto platforms are.

It also has an all-new look that mirrors the brand's most recent models, with the grille similar to the one found on the Fiesta and the body including sharper creases - while the interior in top-end models also incorporates a floating eight-inch touchscreen with the Sync3 infotainment system.

In May 2018, the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne will stop making the Focus and be retooled and devoted to the Ford Ranger midsize pickup and Bronco offroad SUV.

Not to be left out of the race to make cars smarter, the 2019 Ford Focus is said to feature more "advanced features" than any Ford before it.

The "connected car" isn't just a buzzword any more, and drivers are expecting more from their dashboards than an FM radio and Bluetooth. All powertrains will offer a choice between a 6-speed manual and a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
