PC players got their share of optimization, since from here on out, players who only own access to Fortnite's Battle Royale mode will only download its related patches and updates. Unlike PUBG, Fortnite isn't on Steam and on macOS and PC is instead downloaded via the Epic Games Launcher client.
Epic explained in a post on the Battle Royale mode's subreddit that the studio is now investigating the issues, and according to their most recent update, the studio has possibly found the problem and is working speedily to "bring the game fully back up".
As of this writing, it is unknown what caused the extended downtime, with the developer stating that "more updates" will come in due time.
