The two BJP ministers, from the PDP-BJP alliance, tendered their resignations to Sat Sharma due to mounting pressure from opponents.

Later, during investigation, the police arrested the caretaker and alleged that he was the mastermind of kidnapping, rape and killing of the girl from a nomadic tribe with an ulterior motive of terrifying the community and drive them out of the village. Her body was found dumped in a forest near Rasana village seven days later.

On Friday, two Bharatiya Janata Party ministers, Choudhary Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga, who attended a rally in support of the Kathua accused in March, resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir government led by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. During investigation, the crime branch alleged that the girl was drugged and repeatedly raped before being killed by hitting her head with stones.

He said it was the party high command which sent them to Kathua to control the situation. However, sources say that the two BJP ministers resigned after Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to accept their reason for being a part of the rally. "I and the ministry intend to bring an amendment to the POCSO Act asking for the death penalty for rape on children below 12 years", the Union minister said in a video posted on YouTube.
