National Guard Colonel denies rejecting plan to send troops to border

Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense Integration Robert G. Salesses says officials wanted 237 for service in two areas of California with "a set of mission responsibility there that California National Guard has indicated they will not perform".

"The federal government has not yet responded", Keegan said in an emailed statement.

According to the Associated Press, state officials notified federal authorities that deployed soldiers will be prohibited from tackling duties seen as cracking down on illegal immigration: including fixing border patrol vehicles, operating surveillance cameras, and monitoring radio transmissions.

The National Guard Bureau's vice chief says about 900 guard members are deployed so far for President Donald Trump's effort to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Just how limited became clearer Monday after California's National Guard told Homeland Security officials the state will not allow soldiers to do the types of things they're doing elsewhere on the border: monitoring surveillance cameras, performing maintenance and transporting USA border agents.

Ronald Vitiello, the Border Patrol's acting deputy commissioner, said talks with California were ongoing and it was possible the state would lend troops for other support roles, including maritime and aerial surveillance, which include counternarcotics work. State insiders with knowledge of the talks spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter. Earlier this month, President Donald Trump and Protection Secretary James Mattis licensed Upto 4,000 National Guard staff that will assist the Department of Homeland Protection secure the border from several southwestern US states. He was not specific about jobs his troops would or would not perform or how he would distinguish between immigration-related work and going after criminal gangs and drug and gun smugglers.

"We are anticipating additional requirements, and we got a signal from California that they are interested in improving border security", Vitiello said. The other border-state governors - all Republicans - have openly embraced Trump's plans.

Trump this month said he would send thousands of National Guard troops to the southern border, where they could remain until a border wall is constructed.

"The location of Guard personnel - and number specifically working in support of operations along the border, the coast and elsewhere in the state - will be dictated by the needs on the ground", a spokesperson for Brown's office told TheDCNF in a Wednesday email.
