No time frame set for Syria attack

Chemical weapons experts for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria to investigate the suspected poison gas attack.

Meanwhile, Moscow said the formerly rebel-held district of Eastern Ghouta - including Douma, the target of Saturday's attack - had been "totally stabilized" and would soon be patrolled by Russian military police.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russian Federation on Wednesday of imminent military action in Syria over a suspected poison gas attack, declaring that missiles "will be coming" and lambasting Moscow for standing by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Douma and the sprawling eastern Ghouta region near the capital, Damascus, had been under rebel control since 2012 and was a thorn in the side of Assad's government, threatening his seat of power with missiles and potential advances for years.

"We are continuing to assess intelligence and are engaged in conversations with our partners and allies", it added.

Vladimir Shamanov, who chairs the defense committee of the lower house, said the vessels had departed the Mediterranean base for their own safety - "normal practice" when there were threats of attack.

Alexey Malashenko, a specialist in the Syria conflict, said Washington and Moscow were more likely to remain engaged in a war of words.

Syrian regime forces says more than one 100 missiles were fired against a military base in Syria's central Homs province and the research centre in Barzeh, near Damascus. It also said Russian officers found no patients with chemical attack symptoms at a local hospital, and no indication of any burials of victims.

Syria and its backers, Russian Federation and Iran, say reports of the attack were fabricated by rebels, and rescue workers in Douma have accused the U.S. of seeking to use it as a pretext to attack the government.
