JRR Tolkien is said to have regarded "The Fall of Gondolin" as one of the "Great Tales" of the Elder Days.

According to Entertainment Weekly, this new book, to be titled The Fall of Gondolin, will chronicle the fall of the major city Gondolin (in case the name didn't give that away), which was first mentioned in Tolkien's Silmarillion.

It follows another posthumously published Lost Tale, The Tale of Beren and Lúthien, which came out in 2017.

He continued: "It has a dark lord, our first encounter with orcs and balrogs - it's really Tolkien limbering up for what he would be doing later". Soon, however, Morgoth finds Gondolin and his armies lay waste to the city in one of the most epic battle scenes Tolkien ever depicted (including, among other things, the noble Elf Glorfindel dying in battle against a Balrog).
