S.Korea lists agenda for summit with North

The peninsula remains bisected in a perpetual stalemate, with the USA -backed South Korean military lined up against more than a million North Korean troops.

The festivities surrounded the 15 April "The Day of the Sun", the anniversary of the birth of the founder of North Korea and the Kim dynasty, Kim Il Sung, in 1912.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un attended a ballet performance by a Chinese art troupe with his wife in Pyongyang, official media reported Tuesday.

In pictures released by state media from a ballet performance late on Monday, Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, were seen applauding, posing with dancers, and laughing with the head of the Chinese Communist Party's global liaison department, Song Tao.

It would be the first visit to North Korea by a Chinese president since Hu Jintao back in 2005.

Xi's planned trip to Pyongyang appeared to have been on the agenda of a weekend meeting between Kim and a senior Chinese official in Pyongyang, it said. With the test of that long-range missile in November, the North said it had "realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force".

But in late March, Kim made a visit to Beijing, his first known journey overseas since he took power in 2011.

Some of the issues that would have to be tackled include the hundreds of thousands of troops along one the most heavily fortified borders in the world; submarines and ships patrolling on both coasts; South Korea's active military alliance with the U.S; the hosting of USA forces; and North Korean artillery pointed at Seoul.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un plans to meet with South Korean President Moon Jae-in next Friday and will then meet with US President Donald Trump in May. He will be the first North Korean leader to step on South Korean soil since the 1950s.

North Korea has accused the United Kingdom of an "act of war" for deploying ships off the Korean peninsula, an action carried out by London to enforce worldwide sanctions against Pyongyang as a result of its nuclear and missile programs.

Pyongyang and Seoul have technically been at war since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended with a truce-and not a peace treaty.

The Munha Ilbo report said one possible way of ending the conflict could involve reverting the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone that bisects the two Koreas to its original state.
