Team Scotland said in a statement: "Callum has been taken to hospital for medical review following his collapse in the Marathon as is standard procedure".
Hawkins regained conscious and was able to sit up while still at the scene of his collapse.
According to a report, an official informed the spectators to leave Hawkins unattended.
"In competition there are strict rules around accepting medical help and subsequent disqualification".
Hawkins lied there for several minutes before medical staff finally assisted him, but it was a case of too little, too late for the commentators.
BBC Sport commentator Steve Cram said it was "disgraceful" that it took so long for paramedics to attend to Hawkins.
He said: "I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's Marathon", he said.

Hawkins was not the one athlete to bear in brutal conditions.
Hawkins was by no means the only athlete to suffer in the heat - Tanzania's Stephano Huche Gwandu was taken away in a wheelchair after taking a tumble as he crossed the finish line.
However, Australia thrashed Canada 87-47 in the men's basketball final, Shelley won the marathon and David Palmer and Zac Alexander were crowned men's doubles squash champions on the final day.
