Team Scotland said in a statement: "Callum has been taken to hospital for medical review following his collapse in the Marathon as is standard procedure".

Hawkins regained conscious and was able to sit up while still at the scene of his collapse.

According to a report, an official informed the spectators to leave Hawkins unattended.

"In competition there are strict rules around accepting medical help and subsequent disqualification".

Hawkins lied there for several minutes before medical staff finally assisted him, but it was a case of too little, too late for the commentators.

BBC Sport commentator Steve Cram said it was "disgraceful" that it took so long for paramedics to attend to Hawkins.

He said: "I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's Marathon", he said.

Scottish marathoner Callum Hawkins, who was 9th at the Rio Olympics and 4th at the World Champs last summer, was looking to win the Commonwealth Games marathon this morning.

On Twitter, Paula Radcliffe was also critical of the medical response.

Many were also outraged at onlookers who took pictures of Hawkins while he was in medical distress. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of GC2018", he said.

Hawkins was not the one athlete to bear in brutal conditions.

Hawkins was by no means the only athlete to suffer in the heat - Tanzania's Stephano Huche Gwandu was taken away in a wheelchair after taking a tumble as he crossed the finish line.

However, Australia thrashed Canada 87-47 in the men's basketball final, Shelley won the marathon and David Palmer and Zac Alexander were crowned men's doubles squash champions on the final day.

Team Scotland issued a statement shortly after the race - which was eventually won by Australian Michael Shelley - saying Hawkins was recovering well and wouldn't face any long-term health side-effects.
