Steve Wozniak, the tech philanthropist who co-founded Apple, said he is leaving Facebook over the social giant's aggregation of users' data - and how Facebook profits off that info.

Cook was asked about Facebook chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg and Cambridge Analytica, the British firm that was hired by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election. "Facebook makes a lot of advertising money off this", Wozniak said in an email to USA Today.

It's "a big hypocrisy not respecting my privacy when (Facebook CEO Mark) Zuckerberg buys all the houses around his and all the lots around his in Hawaii for his own privacy", Wozniak said. Wozniak said he'd rather pay for Facebook than have his personal information exploited for advertising. "As they say, with Facebook, you are the product", he added.

Wozniak announced he's shutting down his Facebook account amid the worst privacy crisis the social media company has faced.

Wozniak explained to USA Today that he has grown uncomfortable with Facebook's business model and practices. Several other well-known personalities also have deleted Facebook including comedians like Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey.

"I don't think there has been any meaningful impact we've observed", he said on a conference call.

He continued, "Facebook could have done a much better job of being honest".

Elon Musk took the plunge last month in the wake of revelations of a sizable data breach that resulted from an affiliation with research firm Cambridge Analytica.

Despite a smattering of high-profile defections, most Wall Street analysts don't expect a significant dent in Facebook's monthly user base of 2.2 billion worldwide.

Zuckerberg will testify before the congressional committees in Washington this week about the CA scandal and Facebook's response to it. Privacy activists have been warning the general public about this for years, but the realization that third party companies are now able to have access to user data is concerning to say the least.
