The Trump administration wants 4,000 troops along the U.S. -Mexico border to fight drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

Gov. Greg Abbott met with Texas National Guard troops Thursday afternoon in Weslaco, one week after President Donald Trump urged their presence on the U.S. -Mexico border.

"It's also not a permanent solution".

This isn't the first time the Arizona Guard and Customs and Border Protection have worked together.

Sessions cited a Department of Homeland Security report about spiking illegal border crossings in March, showing a 203 percent increase in illegal crossings from March 2017 and March 2018. It says troops can not guard anyone in custody for immigration violations or participate in construction of border barriers.

Aguilar concludes that "deployment of National Guard troops to support the Border Patrol and ports of entry will bolster enforcement efforts", but that "border collaboration with Mexico, enhancing detention, hiring more immigration judges, developing technology capabilities, investing in infrastructure build outs, and working with sending countries-of-origin all play a role in securing the border".

Brown's letter said the California Guard will "do what it does best": focus on transnational criminal gangs, human traffickers, and drug and firearms smugglers throughout the state.

State Sen. Kevin de Leon, a Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and author of California's so-called sanctuary state law, said Guard deployment was unnecessary and not a good use of resources. Major General Michael McGuire said in a press conference earlier this week the 60 guardsmen sent out Friday will do ground-based missions including engineering, infrastructure fix, vehicle maintenance and surveillance support. Lillian Serrano, chair of the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium, acknowledged the governor's proposed limits on the Guard's role but said his decision reflected "flawed logic that we need more boots on the ground".

"We don't know yet what the total cost of his financial operation will be", General Joseph L. Lengyel, of the National Guard Bureau, said.

Stults said from now on, there will be a police presence at both scheduled and unannounced fire drills at the district's schools. Dennis Filippone, who has served as acting superintendent this year, said he is looking forward to stability in the district.

However, the governor added, parties involved must be "crystal clear on the scope of this mission" at the Mexican border.

"Here are the facts: there is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California", Brown wrote the Trump Cabinet members.

With that help, agents will "get back into doing law enforcement work", Karisch said.

California deployed troops to the border under former Presidents George W. Bush in 2006 and Barack Obama in 2010.

The new contingent of California Guard members being deployed could be posted at the border, the coast and elsewhere statewide, Brown said.
