Amazon's global smart speaker share drops below 50 percent in first quarter

The retail giant secured 43.6 percent market share that, while down from a whopping 81.8 percent of the market a year ago, easily topped the space. Since Amazon had a head start of almost 2 years, the company was leading in sales and market share tremendously, and that continues today.

While the news that Amazon and Google are clear market leaders in the field, the fact that Apple is falling behind Alibaba could be a cause for concern for the tech innovator.

Even with this caveat, Apple gets a 6% market share, significantly less than Amazon and Google and a little below the Chinese platform Alibaba e-Commerce.

Google was able to nab the second place last quarter on 2.4 million Google Home shipments.

While Amazon's estimated four million sales were double the first quarter of 2017, its market share fell by around half, from 81.8 per cent, as new entrants attracted buyers.

One of those smart speaker manufacturers that achieved stronger growth than Amazon in the period was Google. "Alibaba and Xiaomi are leading the way in China and their strength in the domestic market alone is proving enough to propel them into the global top five". David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics added, "Today's smart speakers are by no means the finished article but they have captured the consumer imagination and we will see rapid evolution in design, functionality and associated use cases over the coming years". "We are clearly heading toward a time in the not-too-distant future when voice becomes a standard mode of technology interaction alongside established approaches like keyboard, mouse and touchscreen". Apple on the other hand only has the HomePod, which went on sale in February with a high price tag of $349 (approximately Rs 23,700).
