The Irish faced the Netherlands in the quarter-finals on Monday but fell to defeat on penalties after goalkeeper Jimmy Corcoran was controversially sent off.

Ireland centre-back Oisin McEntee was then forced to take over in between the sticks, but was unable to save Redan's retaken spot-kick, which was sacked into exactly the same spot as before, except this time it hit the back of the net as the Netherlands progressed through to the semi-finals of the competition.

Corcoran thought he had saved Holland's final spot kick to take the match to sudden-death, but referee Zbynek Proske deemed that he had come too far off his line and ordered the penalty to be retaken.

Corcoran was understandably distraught after being dismissed.

After a 1-1 draw, the countries found themselves level at 4-4 in a nerve-shredding penalty shoot-out.

With substitutions during a shootout not permitted, centre half Oisin McEntee went into goals and was beaten by Chelsea's Daishawn Redan.
